From the Woods to Kelso Creeks: Why a Real Christmas Tree Still Matters

Step into my boots for a day at Kelso Creeks: a tale of swapping office life for farm work, the hot sun, and the never-ending battle against weeds.

Growing Up with Real Christmas Trees

When I was a kid, having a live Christmas tree was a given. Our house was surrounded by woods, so finding the perfect tree meant a short walk with a saw and a lot of excitement. The smell of fresh pine and the warmth of the house once that tree went up became part of Christmas itself.

After moving to the Huntsville, Alabama area, that simple walk in the woods wasn’t possible anymore. Like many families, we went looking for a place to recapture that feeling.

Why Big-Box Stores Miss the Magic

We tried the usual big-box lots, but the trees were often dry, expensive, and missing the magic. Standing in a parking lot under fluorescent lights just doesn’t compare to standing in a field surrounded by evergreens.

That’s one reason we built Kelso Creeks Christmas Tree Farm—to bring the experience back. The crunch of gravel under your boots, the smell of the trees, the laughter, and the search for “the one” are things no store can duplicate.

The Kelso Creeks Difference

Today, Kelso Creeks welcomes families from across North Alabama and South Tennessee. Guests stroll the fields, sip hot chocolate by the fire, and pick from the freshest Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, and Virginia Pine trees around.

Every pre-cut tree stays in water from the moment it’s unloaded and is kept out of direct sunlight—nothing like the trees baking outside retail stores. Our Virginia Pines, planted more than four years ago, are now big enough for families to cut themselves, offering that genuine choose-and-cut tradition.

Real Trees, Real Traditions

A real Christmas tree does more than decorate a living room—it creates a memory. The scent, the mess of needles, the laughter while stringing lights—all of it becomes part of a family’s story.

Buying from a local, veteran-owned, family farm keeps those stories alive. Every tree at Kelso Creeks has been grown and cared for by our family so yours can make new memories together.
